Successful Cases
Overview
Guangzhou Metro Line 3 is 36.86 km long with 18 stations, opened on December 28, 2006. Guangzhou Metro Airport Line (also known as the north extension of Line 3) is 30.9 km long with 11 stations, opened on October 30, 2010.
Major challenges
The signaling system of the Airport Line includes the cutover with the existing Line 3 and the commissioning of new trains, in addition to the construction of a new line of more than 30 km long. Therefore, the opening of the Airport Line must be based on ensuring the safe and smooth operation of the existing Line 3. This project is a backbone for the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou.
Solution
Guangzhou Metro Line 3 adopted the proven communication-based SeITracTM CBTC moving block system. The communication between the train and the trackside equipment is achieved via the inductive loop communication system. The train can run as fast as 120 km/h and the headway is as short as 90 s.
During the implementation, the test plan and test items were constantly adjusted according to the site status. The surveying and mapping items were classified based on different levels such as safety level, safety certification level, and SMC (System Management Center) non-safety related test level, and items guaranteeing the opening of the line as scheduled were tested preferentially. As a result, 2,113 test items were optimized into 1,458. This allows the line to be opened with ATO functionality within a short period of time.
To minimize the impact of signal debugging on the existing Line 3, a plan was developed at the design stage. Based on the plan, the central equipment was placed at Jiahe station of Line 3, connected via optical fiber with the equipment of the control center at Dashi station. Switching control equipment was also provided. For daytime commissioning, it was independent of Line 3. At nighttime, it was connected to the line after the end of operation, which was feasible and time-efficient.
